Apple to pay $506 million to the University of Wisconsin-Madison as fine

Some of the system-on-chip designs of Apple were responsible for the infringement

A Madison-based judge has given the order to Apple to pay off $506 million for patent infringement to University of Wisconsin-Madison

 

On Wednesday a US judge ordered tech giant Apple to pay off $506 million for patent infringement to the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s patent licensing arm.

The fines paid by Apple are $272 million more than a $234 million federal jury ruling in 2015. A Madison-based judge said that Apple owes the University additional damages because the Cupertino-based tech company continued to infringe on the patent until it expired in December 2016. Court documents show that Apple plans to appeal the ruling, reported Reuters.

The patent that was infringed on was obtained by computer science professor Gurindar Sohi and three students in 1998. The design improves efficiency and performance of a computer processor by predicting user input. Apple’s A7, A8, and A8X system-on-chip designs infringe on the patent, according to the ruling.

Apple denied infringement during the trial.

The University has further filed a second lawsuit against Apple alleging that the company’s A9 chip also infringed on the patent. A ruling hasn’t been issued on it yet.
